April Workshops with Karim Nagi

RHYTHM FOR DANCERS:

It's time to raise the bar for rhythmic literacy! A dancer's immediate connection to the music is the rhythm produced by the Tabla and percussion. Karim teaches each rhythm using the three-sound clapping approach. Karim then performs sample rhythms on the Tabla. Students will learn each rhythm by name, "dum-tak" vocalization, and clapping. Afterwards the dancers will learn choreography segments to help gain bodily control with the sample rhythm, putting theory into practice. By physically personifying each Rhythm, bodily mastery of that rhythm will be achieved. This movement workshop is perfect for any dancer who wants to better understand what they are dancing to.

MAQAM and TAQSIM FOR DANCERS:

Maqam is the Arabic system of scales and melody creation. All songs, whether classical, pop or dance, are created in a Maqam, which dictates whether the song is happy, somber, uplifting, spiritual or sensual. We align notes in the scale with specific body isolations, allowing them to follow a maqam by using her dance vocabulary. Dancers will learn how to recognize, sing and move to maqams by learning famous song examples. Special attention will be given to Taqsim, the art of instrumental solo improvisation. The dancer will practice interpreting the instrumental music into movement and personifying the mood of the music. This workshop is vital for dancers who wish to better interpret melody into movement.

RHYTHM FOR DANCERS:

MAQAM and TAQSIM FOR DANCERS:

BALADI THE EGYPTIAN WAY -- OPEN WORKSHOP  ALL STUDENTS ARE WELCOME

WORKSHOP BY MASTER TEACHER SADIA ON MARCH 13.

14:00 -16:30 (This is Tokyo time)  7,500 YEN

Available online as well as in-person, on either day.  This is the second workshop in a series of three workshops on the topic of Baladi. Student who did not take the first part may take this workshop as each workshop stands alone.  Taken together, the three workshops cover many aspects of Baladi dancing, what it is and is not, how to recognise the form and how to achieve that "Baladi Look" and "Baladi Feeling", and finally how to dance without a choreography to a Baladi Taqsim.

The third workshop will cover Baladi Taqsim (also known as Baladi Progression) , a specialized form of Baladi.

Students will learn authentic movements and styling for Baladi Dancing.  The sytle and feeling of Baladi is different than Oriental, Shaabi, and other styles.  This workshop will help students understand Baladi by including several examples of choreography to a variety of music and songs for Baladi. Students will learn brief pieces of choreography as examples of Baladi styling and feeling during the first hour.  In the other part of the workshop, Sadia will teach a complete Baladi choreography.
